If approached and asked, "Who are you?" most individuals would answer by giving their name; a title assigned at birth for identification. If we really wanted to answer this question it would include more than a simple word description. Actually it's a pretty loaded question. Think about it for a minute and then answer it, but before you do there is one rule: No titles or roles are allowed (ex. mother, husband, CEO, etc.). None of these count.
Your answer to the question above should encompass who you are as an individual; the things you stand for, your values, your ethics, your strengths (talents), and even your weaknesses. This is your character, your distinguishing features. Being a CEO doesn't distinguish you. There are tons of them. What makes your company different from the others? How are you different from the CEO next door? Answer these questions and the ones above and you can begin identifying your business' character. If you are having trouble with this exercise, here are few steps to assist you:
1. Start with a vision. See your business for what you want it to be in the next five or ten years. Write your vision down so that you can see what you are gravitating towards.
2. Define your overall mission. Grow it from your vision and keep it simple. Your business should be striving to achieve something.
3. Establish a procedure for operation. A loving mother does not neglect her child therefore she sets up a system of operations, which includes sheltering, clothing, and feeding her child. Your business is no different. Set up systems to ensure your business is healthy and runs effectively.
4. Train employees and staff based on your business character and procedure. Setting up a system of operations that is only known by one individual makes it difficult for others within the structure to operate effectively.
5. Always operate legally. Part of your business character is to ensure that you are operating legally. Integrity, applicable contracts, and employee maintenance, are all appropriate for business.
